The Wisconsin Journey
Wisconsin: Immigrants, Growth and Statehood This unit will focus on how Wisconsin changed during the 1800s. It became more like it is today. Students will explore how immigrants moved to Wisconsin from Europe to leave their problems behind for a better life. Immigrants came to escape poverty, war, and religious persecution. They saw Wisconsin as a land of opportunity. Immigrants brought their traditions and heritage that helped shape the culture of Wisconsin. Farming and small businesses grew bigger while towns and cities developed around them. Eventually Wisconsin became the thirtieth state and the people looked to the future with hope.
